The Grand Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta

The Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta, which was first opened to the public by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, on 22 February 1978, is not only the largest mosque in South East Asia in terms of structure and capacity, but also holds great historical significance. With a capacity to accommodate up to 120,000 people, this grand mosque is an iconic landmark of Indonesia.

A Symbol of Independence

Located at Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Central Jakarta, on the north eastern corner of the Merdeka Square, the Istiqlal Mosque stands tall with its impressive 45-meter diameter dome and minarets. The idea for the need of a national mosque was inspired by Muslim leader KH Wahid Hashim and executed by Cokro Aminoto, then minister for religious affairs. The name “Istiqlal” itself means “Independence,” serving as a reminder of Indonesia’s struggle for national independence.

The construction of the mosque took 17 years and was personally supervised by President Soekarno. The design was done by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect from North Sumatra. This interfaith collaboration showcases Indonesia’s commitment to religious tolerance.

A Place of Worship

The Istiqlal Mosque boasts a large rectangular prayer hall with a magnificent 45-meter diameter dome supported by 12 round columns. It also has four levels of balconies providing additional space for worshippers. Despite its grandeur, the interior design remains simple.

Over the years, this mosque has become a symbol of unity and harmony among different religious communities in Indonesia. It serves as a place where people come together to practice their faith and foster mutual respect.

A Visit from President Obama

In November 2010, during his brief visit to Indonesia, US President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama paid a special visit to the Istiqlal Mosque. This visit holds great significance as it symbolizes the importance of religious tolerance and diversity in Indonesia.

During their visit, President Obama learned an interesting fact about the mosque’s parking lot. It turns out that during Christmas mass, the mosque’s parking lot is used by the Cathedral’s congregation across the road. Similarly, during Ied prayers, the roles are reversed, and the mosque’s parking lot is used by the Cathedral’s congregation. This unique arrangement showcases the spirit of cooperation and respect between different religious communities in Jakarta.

President Obama praised the Istiqlal Mosque as a symbol of religious tolerance that characterizes Indonesia and its people. He highlighted how such tolerance can inspire not only Indonesians but also people around the world.

How to Get There

The grand Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta is easily accessible due to its proximity to Gambir Train Station. If you are coming from Sukarno-Hatta International Airport, you can take public transportation like “Metromini” or Transjakarta bus towards Gambir. From Gambir, you have the option to use a motorbike taxi known as “ojek” or simply walk to reach this magnificent mosque.

Visiting this iconic landmark will provide you with a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s rich history and its commitment to religious tolerance. The grandeur of Istiqlal Mosque coupled with its significant role in promoting unity among different faiths makes it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
