Bali has always been a dream destination for travelers seeking natural beauty and tranquility. With its tropical beaches, majestic volcanoes, and picturesque rice fields, the island captivates the hearts of tourists from all over the world. However, to truly experience the essence of Bali, one must delve into its rich cultural heritage – and there’s no better place to do so than in Ubud, particularly at Ubud Palace!

The Enchanting Puri Saren Agung

Nestled amidst lush terraced rice fields, verdant rainforests, and a meandering stream lies Ubud – the cultural hub of Bali that mesmerizes both local and international tourists alike. It is a place where serenity, creativity, and spirituality blend harmoniously with the locals’ way of life, creating a captivating atmosphere that offers incredible cultural and spiritual experiences.

In addition to its historical museums, unique traditions, and handicrafts made by skilled artisans, Ubud is also home to Ubud Palace or Puri Saren Agung. Situated in downtown Ubud, this humble palace has been the residence of Ubud’s royal family since the late 19th century. Over the years, it has witnessed the triumphs and tribulations of the Kingdom of Ubud. Today, it stands as an important historical landmark in Bali while serving as a museum and center for traditional Balinese arts.

A Glimpse into Balinese Architecture

Ubud Palace boasts beautifully crafted buildings with high aesthetic value. The walls and doorways are adorned with intricate stone carvings that showcase Balinese craftsmanship at its finest. Within its premises stands a sacred temple where visitors can immerse themselves in Balinese spirituality. As you wander around the palace, make sure to pay attention to the intricate details of every object that represents Balinese traditions and cultures. Don’t forget to capture some Instagram-worthy shots along the way! The palace also features an auditorium and a banyan tree that offers shade during the daytime.

If you wish to delve deeper into Balinese culture, consider attending a traditional Balinese dance performance at night. Lasting about 1.5 hours, this mesmerizing spectacle will transport you into the enchanting world of Balinese artistry. The Palace opens its doors from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, while the dance performances take place from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Getting There

Ubud Palace is conveniently located in the heart of Ubud, specifically at Jl. Raya Ubud No.8, Kec. Ubud, Gainyar, Bali. It’s just a two-minute walk from Ubud Art Market, making it easily accessible for tourists exploring the town center. If you prefer a hassle-free journey, renting a private car is highly recommended. However, if you’re feeling adventurous or traveling on a budget, renting a motorbike is also a viable option.

If you’re coming directly from Ngurah Rai International Airport, expect approximately one hour of travel time by car. From Badung, it will take around 35 minutes by car, while driving from Gianyar will only require about 25 minutes.

Things to Do Nearby

Just in front of Ubud Palace lies Ubud Art Market – a traditional market where you can find an array of souvenirs, paintings, antiques gifts, household items, handicrafts and more to bring back home as mementos for your loved ones or yourself.

While in Ubud, take the opportunity to immerse yourself further in Balinese culture and spirituality by visiting the renowned Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. More than just a monkey habitat, this sanctuary is a cultural and spiritual complex designed based on the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana – harmony with God, people, and the environment. Within its 27-acre grounds, you’ll find temples, lush forests, and of course, hundreds of monkeys.

If you’re up for a short walk from Ubud Palace, don’t miss out on the Campuhan Ridge Walk. This hidden gem offers a tranquil escape and breathtaking views of palm trees and rice fields as you stroll along the ridge. While this place is worth visiting at any time of day, catching the sunrise is an absolute must for an unforgettable experience.

If you’re seeking a more laid-back Bali experience and are eager to explore the rich cultural traditions of its people, heading to Ubud Palace should be at the top of your list. However, amidst the current situation, it’s crucial to prioritize your health and safety. Remember to wear your mask at all times, maintain physical distancing, and regularly sanitize your hands with soap or hand sanitizer.
