The Hindu Buddhist culture of Blambangan flourished for 200 years until it was overthrown by Islam during the reign of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. During this period, Cungking village was where the Osing people originally lived. However, due to conflicts with Dutch troops during the independence war in the 1800s, they were forced to abandon Cungking and seek refuge in a nearby densely forested area.
In their new home, they found an abundance of Kemiri and Duren (Durian) trees. These trees soon became an integral part of their village, giving it its name – Kemiren.
